She Persisted Around the World tells the story of 13 influential women around the world who "persisted" and never gave up in the pursuit of their dreams. The women mentioned in the story include Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Caroline Herschel, Kate Sheppard, Marie Curie, Viola Desmond, Mary Verghese, Aisha Rateb, Wangari Maathai, Joanne Rowling, Sissi, Leymah Gbowee, Yuan Yuan Tan, and Malala Yousafzai. Each one of these women in one way or another were doubted, ridiculed, and faced with people who told them that their dreams were too big, that "girls" could never accomplish those things and each one of these women proved them wrong. These women have won Nobel Peace Prizes, become accomplished writers, scientist, environmentalist, dancers, humanitarians, and athletes. Some have even changed policies, government, and each one of them has paved a path for young women everywhere. These women, despite their trials never gave up and turned their dreams into history. The book encourages everyone especially young girls to dream big and never give up.
Both She Persisted Around the World and the original She Persisted by Chelsea Clinton are inspiring stories that would make wonderful additions to any Kindergarten-5th-grade classroom library. Not only is the book itself incredibly informative and provides the history and background of these women; the overall message of the book is very moving. I would definitely include this book in a social studies class as resource material for a research activity about an influential historical figure. Likewise, along with each woman mentioned there is a quote by them. As a writing activity, these quotes could be used as prompts and students could write about what the quote means to them similar to Mr. Browns Precepts in Wonder that we read earlier this semester.
