Toys in Space by Mini Grey is an adorable and funny story about a search for a lost toy. It all starts when the toys are left outside for the first time during the night. As it gets darker, the toys can't help but marvel at the night sky, while also being scared of the dark. In an effort to distract themselves from the long night ahead they decided to tell stories, and The WonderDoll volunteered to make up the story. The story included all of the toys, the pink Horse, the Sheep, the Cowboy, the Blue Rabbit, Dinosaur, Robot, and WonderDoll. The story goes that there was a star in the night sky that got bigger and bigger until they realized it was a spaceship. A bright light came form the spaceship, and beamed all the toys inside of it. The spaceship belonged to a space creature called the Hoctopize. The Hoctopize had been crying because he lost his favorite toy Cuddles. The Hoctopize had been searching everywhere for his lost toy, but he still wasn't able to find it. He took the toys to a room he had filled with thousands of sleeping toys he had picked up from backyards all over earth, but still no Cuddles. The other toys told the Hoctopize that stealing other children's toys wasn't nice and helped the Hoctopize return all the toys to their owners. Once all the toys were returned the Hoctopize was still sad because he didn't have cuddles. The other toys had an idea to throw the Hoctopize a party to cheer him up. The toys and the Hoctopize played games and had a lot of fun, but the toys new they had to get home. The toys said goodbye to the Hoctopize and made their way home, and then before they knew it the toys opened their eyes and it was morning. In the end, the toys made it home and the Hoctopize found cuddles where he least expected it.

Toys in space is such a fun book to add to any PreK-2nd grade classroom library. Through its beautiful illustrations and humorous as well as heartfelt writing, I think its a story that the students will really enjoy. The entire book is set at night when everyone has gone to sleep and has the tag line "what happens when you leave your toys in the garden at night"? The story is fun, whimsical, and imaginative and would be an excellent way for students to challenge their creativity and make their own stories for what they think their toys do when they go to sleep. This kind of writing assignment after having read the students the book could be a really nice activity. Moreover, after the students have written their stories they can bring their favorite toy to hold on the carpet as they share with one another.
